KINDERGARTEN 2
Take a glimpse of how a day in the life of a K2 child is like...
Our K2 Schedule!
The class accommodates children from 5 to 6 years old where we focus on the six developmental areas - Language & Literacy, Discovery of the World, Social Emotional Development, Motor Skills Development, Aesthetics & Creative Expression and Numeracy.

Their Learning Experiences
Take a look at what our children from the Kindergarten 2 class have been learning!
Term 1 : Our Community
In Term 1, our K2 children went on a neighbourhood walk for their field trip. The children were able to identify places that are familiar to them in their community such as the police station and supermarket.
Their exposure towards the different jobs in our community has then involved the children in creating a portrait on what they would like to be when they grow up. Additionally, the children planned activities and performances for the elderly in St Luke's Eldercare while understanding their needs and conditions.
Term 2 : Our Natural Environment
In Term 2, the children are learning about the topic on conserving the habitats of endangered animals. From the previous lesson, they learnt about the reasons for protecting the animals from being endangered. They became curious about the possible solutions to save the animals. Using a K-W-L chart, the children were engaged in the process of inquiry-based learning.
The K2’s KWL Chart
What I know:
There will not be any more wildlife animals for us to see and enjoy
It affects our ecosystem
The animals will suffer
What I want to know:
How can we save the animals from becoming endangered?
Who can help to save the animals?
What have I learnt:
Chemicals (insect spray) pollute the sea, fish get sick then birds eat them
Hunting
Destroy their homes or where they live
The two teaching techniques demonstrated in the lesson are:
1. Scaffolding
2. Problem solving

Problem Solving
Ms Dilys facilitated the small group discussion where the children discuss about what they have learnt from the video on endangered animals. Problem solving can be seen when she brought up an issue on how the ecosystem is affected which the children have understood. In order to help with their thinking process, she asked questions such as “Remember when their homes are destroyed, why were they destroyed?” and “What can we do if there were no more trees for them to live in?” The teacher allowed the children to find answers to solve the problems faced as shared in a video that is educational where new knowledge is shared. Allowing children to talk aloud helps with the process of thinking when solving problems (MacNaughton & Williams, 2009). A Show-and-Tell activity was also held where the children presented their poster and reflect on their learning process.

Scaffolding
The K2 children gathered in their small groups to create a poster where they inform people on the possible ways that they can do their part in conserving the endangered animals. Ms Dilys had a one-to-one time with a child while sounding out the phonic sounds to help the child recall what are the letters that make a particular sound. A technique or combination of techniques help to extend children’s understanding and skills (MacNaughton & Williams, 2009). For example, “Litter, what is the last sound that you can hear?” Questioning from the teacher encourages the children to apply their phonic sound skills into their writing and spelling skills where they try to breakdown the word into their individual sounds as demonstrated by the teacher.
